Quantification of Hypochlorite in Water Using the Nutritional Food Additive Pyridoxamine

Chlorine is a widely used disinfectant and oxidant for an array of municipal industrial applications, including potable water, swimming pools, cleaning membranes. The most popular method to verify the concentration free chlorine colorimetric based on DPD (N, N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine), which fast reasonably cheap, but its product are potentially toxic. Therefore, novel, environmentally friendly quantification residual food additive pyridoxamine (4-(aminomethyl)-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylpyridin-3-ol) was investigated. Pyridoxamine B6 vitamin with absorption maximum at 324 nm fluorescence emission 396 nm. reacts rapidly selectively chlorine, resulting in linear decrease both absorbance emission, giving therefore calibration curves negative slope. successfully applied from 0.2 250 mg/L. Using 1 cm cuvettes, limit 0.12 mg Cl2/L. methods were actual environmental samples, deviation between results 4% 9%. While does not react chloramine, monochloramine possible when iodide added, reaction unfavourably slow.
